What Is Ortho-K?

The cornea is the clear front surface of the eye, and it does most of the focusing. In a nearsighted eye it is shaped slightly too steeply, so light focuses in front of the retina instead of on it and distance vision blurs. An Ortho-K lens applies gentle, precisely mapped pressure across the corneal surface overnight, flattening the center by a fraction of the width of a human hair. That is enough to move the focal point onto the retina.

Nothing is cut, removed, or permanently altered. This is the central difference between Ortho-K and refractive surgery, and it is why the treatment is appropriate for children whose eyes are still developing.

• Daytime freedom. No glasses at school, at work, on the field, or in the pool.
• Non-surgical. No incisions, no tissue removal, no permanent change to the eye.
• Reversible. Discontinue at any time and the cornea returns to its original shape.
• Myopia control. For children and teens, the same lenses create the optical conditions associated with slower eye growth.

Slowing Myopia in Children and Teens

Here is what most parents are not told at a routine exam: a stronger prescription each year is not just an inconvenience. It reflects the eyeball physically getting longer. That elongation is permanent, and higher myopia carries a lifelong increase in risk for retinal detachment, myopic maculopathy, glaucoma, and early cataract. Correcting the blur with stronger lenses does nothing about the growth underneath it.

That is why we measure axial length, the physical front-to-back length of the eye, at baseline for every child and remeasure it on a defined schedule. Prescription alone is a lagging and noisy indicator. Axial length is the number that tells you whether control is actually working, and we chart it against expected growth so you can see the answer rather than take it on faith.

Is Ortho-K Safe?
