Swimming in lenses carries a real, documented risk, and most people do it anyway because the alternative is swimming blind. Why Water and Contact Lenses Do Not Mix
Can you swim while wearing contact lenses?
You should not. Water of any kind, including pools, lakes, oceans, hot tubs, and tap water, can carry microorganisms that a contact lens will hold against the cornea. The one of most concern is acanthamoeba, a free-living organism that causes an uncommon but severe and difficult-to-treat form of keratitis. Ortho-K resolves this by removing lenses from the eye entirely during waking hours, so there is nothing in your eye when you enter the water.
The mechanism is straightforward. A lens sitting on the cornea creates a small reservoir between lens and eye. Organisms that would ordinarily be flushed away by tears and blinking become trapped there, in warm, sustained contact with the corneal surface. A soft lens also absorbs water into its matrix, extending the exposure well beyond the swim itself.

- Surfing, paddleboarding, and kayaking. Salt water, wind, and the certainty of losing a lens all cease to be relevant.
- Open water swimming. Being able to sight a buoy matters for safety as well as performance.

The Water Rules That Still Apply
Ortho-K removes lenses from the water. It does not remove water from the lens care routine, and the same organism is the reason.
- Never rinse a lens with tap water, including filtered water. Sterile solution only.
- Never rinse or fill a case with water. A case rinsed under the tap and refilled with solution is a contaminated case.
- Bottled water is not sterile. Safe to drink, not safe for lenses.
- Dry your hands completely before handling. Wet hands are water contact.
- Never shower or swim in your Ortho-K lenses. This should not arise, since they come out on waking, but it applies if you nap in them.

Practical Notes for Regular Swimmers
- Chlorine still irritates eyes. Goggles remain sensible for comfort even when they are no longer needed for vision.
- Early morning swimmers get the best of the treatment. Vision is at its sharpest in the first hours after removal.
- Post-swim dryness is common and approved rewetting drops help. Rinsing the eyes with clean saline after a chlorinated swim is reasonable.
- Do not insert lenses immediately after a long swim if your eyes feel irritated. Let the surface settle first.
- Report any red eye after swimming, even without lenses involved. Water exposure and eye symptoms together always deserve a same-day look.
A final practical note for anyone swimming several mornings a week. Ortho-K vision is at its sharpest in the first hours after removal and drifts very slightly through the day, so an early session sits in the best part of the curve. If your training is in the evening instead, mention it at your fitting, because a design that holds well into the evening can be prioritised over one that maximises morning acuity.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I open my eyes underwater with Ortho-K?
Your corneal correction is not affected by water, so vision underwater is the same as it would be for anyone without a refractive error, which is to say blurry without goggles.
The reshaping is not washed away or disturbed by swimming. There is nothing in the eye to displace.
Do I still need goggles?
For comfort and chlorine protection, usually yes, but ordinary inexpensive goggles rather than prescription ones.
For clear underwater vision, goggles are still required, because water disrupts the optics of the eye regardless of how it is corrected.
What about hot tubs and spas?
With Ortho-K there is nothing in your eye, so the lens-related risk does not apply. Hot tubs remain a higher-risk water environment generally.
Never wear lenses in a hot tub, which is relevant only if you have napped in them or wear other lenses at any point.
Is swimming alone a good enough reason to consider Ortho-K?
For a competitive swimmer, water polo player, or open water swimmer, it frequently is, particularly combined with the general daytime freedom.
For someone who swims a few times a summer, the case is weaker on its own and stronger when combined with other factors such as sport, dust, or progression in a child.
