When the Surgical Answer Was No
A refractive surgeon declining a case is good medicine, not a dead end. The reasons are usually structural, and most of them do not apply to overnight corneal reshaping because nothing is being cut.
Refractive surgery
- Permanent removal or reshaping of corneal tissue
- Requires adequate corneal thickness
- Generally requires a stable prescription for a year or more
- Adults only, typically eighteen and up
- Cannot be undone if the outcome disappoints
Overnight Ortho-K
- Temporary reshaping of the epithelial surface only
- Thickness matters far less because no tissue is removed
- A moving prescription can be met with a redesigned lens
- Appropriate for children as well as adults
- Stop wearing the lenses and the cornea returns to baseline
Dry Air, Long Rounds, and Pickleball Season

At what age should a Scottsdale parent start myopia control?
As soon as progression is documented, which for most children is between seven and eleven. Myopia advances fastest roughly between ages seven and fifteen, so intervention early in that window has more remaining progression available to prevent. Waiting for a child to be old enough to handle lenses independently costs progression that does not come back.
