Arena Dust Is a Category of Its Own
Ordinary desert dust settles. Arena dust does not, because it is being continuously churned by hooves and kept suspended at exactly the height of a rider on horseback. An hour in a covered arena on a still evening puts more particulate against the front of the eye than a whole day outdoors elsewhere.

- Removing a lens to rinse it in a barn is exactly the wrong place to do it.
- Rigid daytime lenses trap grit underneath, which is immediately and sharply painful.
- Glasses collect a film, get wiped on a shirt, and end the season scratched.
- A bare eye clears grit with tears and a blink, which is what it evolved to do.
Can I ride the same day I start Ortho-K?
Yes. The lenses come out in the morning before you leave the house, so your eyes are unaided and uncovered for every hour you spend in an arena or on a trail. The only caution in the first week or two is that vision may soften late in the day before the correction fully stabilizes, so keep your glasses in the truck until we confirm the fit is holding.
Being Realistic About Forty-Five Minutes
From Cave Creek you are crossing almost the entire metro north to south. There is no shortcut and no version of this that takes twenty minutes. What can be managed is when and how often.
The visit load is front-loaded and then light: about five appointments in the first month and two or three a year afterward. Families with two children being fitted together make one trip instead of two, and we schedule them consecutively as a matter of course.
